After a crazy few days in San Francisco we set off super early (like 6am early!) to tackle the 170 mile drive to Yosemite National Park. We decided that we were only going to spend the one day at the park so we were keen to make the most of our time there by arriving as early as we could.

We finally arrived at about 11am and found a parking spot (if you're planning on visiting in peak season then bear in mind that parking fills up by about midday!) and we found a quiet spot for our picnic lunch which had the most incredible views of Half Dome and North Dome. Words can't explain just how huge and how impressive the domes are in real life, and I was fascinated by the contrast between the two in terms of the colour of the rock and the detail of the formations.

Also, is it just us or does North Dome not look exactly like Jabba the Hutt... lol.

We walked down towards the river and saw the most amazing view of both of the Domes in between the trees. I was super jealous of the people floating around in dingy's... would definitely have done that if we'd had more time to spend here!

There is a free shuttle bus service (click for map PDF) which runs all around the park, taking you to the key locations to get some of the best views! We parked in Yosemite Village which was pretty central, and got on the shuttle bus (at no. 10 on the map) up to Lower Yosemite Falls (no. 6). We decided to walk up the Lower Yosemite Fall Trail in order to get a good view of the waterfall and it did not disappoint!

We walked back down to the main trail and hopped back on the shuttle bus to Yosemite Village before jumping in the car to begin our journey to Mammoth Lakes. This was one of my favourite drives throughout our trip, providing undoubtedly some of the most incredible views we saw and at the best time of day - sunset.

We finally arrived in Mammoth Lakes for our stopover at about 10pm where we found the most incredible diner serving up the HUGEST portions of pasta you ever did see! And that is a side salad... yes... a side salad. Needless to say we saved most of it for lunch the following day!

We spent the night at Motel 6 in Mammoth Lakes (when in America... right?!) before setting off early again the next morning for the next leg of our trip... VEGAS via Death Valley! But you'll have to come back again for the next instalment if you want to see/read all about our Death Valley experience!

Until then, don't forget that prints from my West Coast Adventures Series (like the ones below) are available to purchase from my online shop... make sure you check them out!
